Gareth Southgate has confirmed Luke Shaw was ‘up and talking’ after suffering a head injury playing for England against Spain at Wembley. The full-back’s head collided with a Spanish body and Shaw needed to be stretchered off, after receiving oxygen on the pitch. The scenes were worrying, but Shaw was soon awake in the dressing and talking to the doctors.

England manager Southgate confirmed after the game Shaw would need further assessment.  He said: ‘Luke Shaw is up and talking and will be assessed. He gave a great ball for the goal. ‘Marcus Rashford had a great impact on the game. Joe Gomez’s defending was excellent.

‘There are individual positives and as a collective they gave everything.’ The Manchester United defender was not immediately taken to hospital and assured his supporters after the game he would soon be back in action. Shaw helped put England in front when he assisted Marcus Rashford’s strike, but Spain came roaring back to win the game 2-1. England had a goal disallowed at the death when Danny Welbeck was adjudged to have fouled David de Gea.
