Chelsea Coach, Sarri reacts to Community Shield defeat to Manchester City
Maurizio Sarri admits Chelsea must improve after their humbling Community Shield defeat to Manchester City.
Two goals either side of half-time from Sergio Aguero put the game to bed – but it could have been worse for Chelsea who were outplayed throughout.
Sarri has only been working with the Chelsea squad for two weeks but says they must quickly improve ahead of the Premier League opener next weekend.
‘In the first half it was not too bad,’ Sarri said after Chelsea’s 2-0 defeat at Wembley.
‘The second half was a difference from the physical point of view. We have to work. Our pre-season has been a bit crazy so we have to work.
‘I do not want to talk only about the defensive phase of the team, not just the defenders. We have to improve in the other half so the defenders can be less busy.’

Pep Guardiola, meanwhile, was delighted by Manchester City’s display in sweltering conditions in north London.
‘I congratulate all the players,’ he told BT Sport. ‘It was so tough in the first half with the heat but we started well, so good.
‘The mentality was right and we beat a strong team.’
Asked whether it will be tougher to defend the title than it was to win it in the first place, Guardiola added: ‘We don’t have to think about this too much.
‘This was the first game, now we need to prepare for the next one. We will see at the end of the season.’
The former Barcelona manager also backed young midfielder Phil Foden to flourish for City this season after impressing against Chelsea.
‘He was [ready] last season… now he’s one year more mature,’ Guardiola said. ‘It’s so good to have another player with this talent.’
