British PM, Theresa May Rocks Locally Made ‘Akwete Cloth’ From Abia State During Visit To Nigeria (Photos)
The people of Abia State who are well known for their business expertise and their ability to manufacture locally made products, have once again lived up to expectation.
The British Prime Minister, Theresa May, on Thursday, arrived Nigeria, as part of her visit to some African countries, and proceeded to a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The influential UK politician, was trending on social media shortly after her visit to the country because of her suit which its material was made from local Nigerian fabric.
Investigation by Edujandon.com correspondent, Odinaka George, revealed that the suit was made from the famous ‘Akwete Cloth’, a locally made fabric by the women from Akwete from Ukwa East Local Government Area of Abia state.
Nigerians from the South Eastern part of the country have taken to their social media pages to praise Theresa May who ignored Eurpoean designers, including Gucci and Prada, to support the locally made product from the country.
For those who don’t know, Akwete Cloth is a unique hand woven textile produced in Igboland for which the town of Akwete in Abia state, Nigeria is famous.
The traditional Igbo weaving as demonstrated in Akwete processes sisal-hemp, raffia and spun cotton into finished products.
