Twitter users debate why Mandela’s offspring hang on to his name
As the world celebrated the centenary birthday of Nelson Mandela on Wednesday , Twitter users used the opportunity to debate why most of the late apartheid activist’ s offsprings have refused to drop his name , even after marriage .
It all started with a Twitter user , Hloni Nyetanyane writing : “ Mandela’ s grand & great – granddaughters are married , but still holding on to Mandela surname. They don’ t wanna lose out on the commercial currency that comes with Mandela name .
# MandelaDay # 67 Minutes ”
A quick google search revealed that Mandela’ s female children and even some of his grandchildren born to his female children have held on his name , which is not exactly a standard practice in Africa .
His eldest daughter with his second wife , Zenani , married to a prince of Swaziland , Prince Thumbumuzi Dlamini kept her maiden name . Her own daughter kept her grandfather’ s name , making her Zamaswazi Dlamini – Mandela.
And others in the Mandela family tree have kept the name .
Nelson Mandela was married to three women during his lifetime and is survived by three living children .
Meanwhile , Twitter users are reacting to the earlier tweet.
See some of their reactions below :

I think that’s Makaziwe Mandela’s husband, with a double barrel surname – Amuah-Mandela. Their bundle of joy was also given the Mandela surname; Amuah was dropped.

There's also this other grandson Dlamini-Mandela

It’s their legacy. Not even on this day are you swayed to be in the moment to celebrate the centenary in an honour of. Madiba? You can’t bring yourself to focus on the positive side of things. Do I detect a tinge of jealousy in spite of what the entire family has been thru

Most of their husbands married for the cache of the name too. If they could change their name to Mandela they would

Some man married to the Mandela daughter(s) use the Mandela surname…even their kids. Very opportunistic!

Follow us on social media:Maybe commercial considerations didn't even come in. It could just be pride in the old man as their ancestor. Personally, I see it as an indictment on the grandsons-in-law. Their kids have no pride in them to the extent of not taking their names. It would kill me as a dad.
