The dust is starting to settle on Cristiano Ronaldo’s move to Juventus. Summer after summer had passed with rumours that Ronaldo would be leaving Real Madrid and at long last, the reports came true in 2018. A disagreement over contracts saw Ronaldo’s relationship with Florentino Perez deteriorate and Juventus jumped at the possibility of signing the Portuguese for ‘only’ €100 million. Although Ronaldo is now 33-years-old, what he brings to Serie A both on and off the pitch makes the deal look like a bargain. Unsurprisingly, tributes have been raining in from Real Madrid.Ronaldo is arguably their greatest player of all-time, quite the achievement with the club boasting the likes of Alfredo di Stefano, Ferenc Puskas and Zinedine Zidane as alumni. He scored 450 goals in just 438 appearances and won 15 major honours during his time with Los Blancos. However, one noticeable absentee from the list of tributes came from one of Ronaldo’s closest friends in Spain – Marcelo.

MARCELO POSTS EMOTIONAL INSTAGRAM TRIBUTE

Two days down the line, though, and the Brazilian has finally posted his goodbye and it was certainly worth the wait.

“Who would’ve thought, right Cris? It’s now time to say good-bye…I swear to you that I never imagined this day would come, but nothing in life lasts forever and I hope you get to be very happy in your new adventure,” he wrote on his Instagram.

“We spent almost 10 years together, 10 years of happiness, good football, victories, defeats and wonderful times. I learned a lot from you, your dedication is the most strange thing I ever saw in an athlete.

“I wish all the best for you and your family!

“I will miss our pre-game talks when you guessed the score correctly and calmed us ahead of the Finals with your experience and support!

“I’m proud of having played with you but not because you are the best player but because of the kind of person you are.

“When I retire I will sit in a bar to drink a beer and I will tell our stories and show our pictures. Yours sincerely, #M12.”

This has to be one of the greatest public tributes to another player, surely?

There’s no wonder it has already garnered over one million ‘likes’ in the space of a few hours and it’s the perfect goodbye to a brilliant footballing friendship.

It will no doubt prove yet another moment of closure for Ronaldo who will now turn his focus to what lies ahead with Juventus.
