Trump Invites Buhari To White House On April 30
U.S. President Donald Trump would host President Muhammadu Buhari on April 30, the White House announced in a statement it issued on Sunday evening.
The meeting comes weeks after Rex Tillerson, then U.S. secretary of state, visited Nigeria and other African countries in March only to be fired after his return to Washington.
Tillerson’s trip was part of attempts to smooth relations after Trump reportedly dismissed some African nations as “shithole countries” in January. Trump later denied making the comment.
In the statement, the White House said Mr Buhari would meet Mr Trump at Washington to discuss issues including “fighting terrorism” and economic growth.
“President Trump looks forward to discussing ways to enhance our strategic partnership and advance our shared priorities:
“Promoting economic growth and reforms, fighting terrorism and other threats to peace and security, and building on Nigeria’s role as a democratic leader in the region.
“The relationship of the United States with Nigeria is deep and strong, and Nigeria’s economic growth, security, and leadership in Africa will advance our mutual prosperity,” the statement read in part.
Nigeria, West Africa’s largest economy, is among the countries combatting Islamist extremism with help from the United States.
The nation is battling an array of security threats across its territory, from Boko Haram jihadists in the northeast to oil militants in the south.
