How John Boyega Had Wanted A Monster To Crash Into 3rd Mainland Bridge In ‘Pacific Rim’

.The opening sequence of Pacific Rim Uprisin g , John Boyega ‘s latest sci-fi vehicle, finds his character rocking out to Wizkid’s “Daddy Yo” while donning a snazzy ankara jacket. It was one of the little ways Boyega, who also produced the movie, hinted at his character’s Nigerian heritage.
Well, as it turns out, Boyega intended for the movie’s nod to Nigeria to be a lot less subtle. According to the British-Nigerian, the opening sequence he originally had in mind involved a kaiju, the franchise’s giant monster, crashing into the 3rd mainland bridge.
Speaking about the initial plan during a private screening of the movie in Lagos, Boyega said:
“At the early stages of this production, I wanted to see the first sequence in Lagos. I wanted a monster to come out of the river and crash into the third mainland bridge. It was an idea that I had.
I also wanted two Nigerian twins in one of the robots they built themselves and I wanted it to have a worldwide appeal.”
According to him, he got a lot of pushback because others involved didn’t think Nigeria was ready for something of that scale. “That challenged me. I wanted to come back and make sure that we’re ready because we deserve it”, Boyega said.
Well, now that he’s back, Boyega has already mentioned his plan to develop Nigerian stories into films — merging Hollywood with Nollywood — with an indie budget of $20-$25 million dollars. We honestly can’t wait to see what he comes up with.
Pacific Rim Uprising is still showing in cinemas nationwide
