A Nigerian man has been remanded in prison by a court after he reportedly beat his 42-year-old wife to death in Lagos.

An Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State on Tuesday remanded Godwin Alawa for alleged murder of his wife, Victoria Edet, 42.

Alawa, 48, who appeared on a charge of murder, is to remain behind bars pending advice from the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

His plea was not taken.

Sgt. Kehinde Omisakin had earlier told the court that Alawa committed the offence on Feb. 11, at No. 16, Budland St., Ojodu.

She said Alawa was in the habit of beating the deceased, and on the said date, he allegedly beat Victoria to death.

The offences contravened Section 223 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 which prescribes death sentence if found guilty.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs A.O. Komolafe, ordered that Alawa should be kept behind bars and adjourned until April 16 for receipt of advice.
