But it was substitute Jesse Lingard who ensured Manchester United took all three points – and the bragging rights – over Antonio Conte’s men.
Lukaku delivered a pinpoint cross into the box which Lingard duly nodded home to put United into the lead.
And Lingard’s goal was not the only thing which put a smile onto many Manchester United supporters’ faces.
The 25-year-old couldn’t resist referencing Hollywood blockbuster Black Panther during his celebration and it fans went into overdrive on Twitter as a result.
“When my man Jesse Lingard did that #BLACKPANTHER celebration and he became my favorite player for 4 minutes,” one fan wrote on Twitter.
Another said: “This celebration plus the win made my day g. @ManUtd @JesseLingard.”
Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho was delighted with his side’s result against the Premier League champions.
“It is not special because it is Chelsea, it is very special as we beat the champions, who are a fantastic team, who are very difficult to beat and because this is the three points that keep us in second place, which is the place we are fighting for,” he said.
“It opens a little gap, not much to Chelsea, and it is a very important result for us. It feels special as the players gave everything.
“It is not possible to win against a team with the quality of Chelsea without the quality we gave.”
