Presidency has debunked a news report quoting President Muhammadu Buhari as saying he does not know whether he would contest the 2019 presidential election.

President Buhari arrives Paris Ahead of the One Planet Summit in France

President Buhari was quoted to have granted a radio interview in which he allegedly said that he did not know whether he would seek re-election in 2019.

Reuters had cited Buhari as saying in the interview that the decision was both personal and also one for all Nigerians.

But the presidency, through Buhari’s personal assistant on new media, Bashir Ahmad, denied the interview, saying the person who allegedly granted the interview was not Buhari and that Buhari had not given any interviews on Thursday.

The presidency also said in a series of tweets that “it’s too early to start talking about next year elections when there are so many important and pressing issues on his desk.”

Acording to the tweets, “Good afternoon Reuters, could you kindly provide more details on this your report, which radio interview did President @MBuhari talk about 2019 election? #FakeNewsAlert.”

“This report from @Reuters is NOT true, President @MBuhari didn’t grant any radio interview where he talked about 2019 election, for Mr. President, it’s too early to start talking about next year elections when there are so many important and pressing issues on his desk.”

Meanwhile, Reuters has deleted the fake story, saying it discovered it was untrue.

However, Some Nigerians took to their twitter handles to react to the fake story.

king Henry with handle, @Henribankz, twitted thus: “OMG!! it was a comedy show which I listened to on 95.1 FM ..it was by this MC TAGWE the comedian who talks like Mr.President and not PMB..@BashirAhmaad.”

For [Johannes Tobi Wojuola] with handle, @Johannxs, “This is far beyond embarrassing; it is a dirty job. @Reuters mischievously quotes a comedian on a radio show as the President’s. This should be taken down immediately.”

Others twitted reacted thus:

Sir, with all sincerity do you think our dear President is giving due attention to the pressing issues?

Too early? Stop this pretense. The campaign has started already, at least, through the usual body language.

POT calling KETTLE BLACK!

You very much know that PMB is vying to be reelected in 2019, and calculations have started.

And why did he appoint Amaechi as the Director General of his campaign, if 2019 elections talk is too early and unimportant?

Assuming all you claimed were true, would you say @MBuhari doesn’t have right to do such?

But what @BashirAhmaad is saying is that

@MBuhari never granted such an interview as reported by@Reuters. Is this too difficult to comprehend?

Why are you people like this?
