Peace Corps Seeks End To Face-off With Police
FOLLOWING the court ruling that ordered the Nigerian Police to re-open the Peace Corps of Nigeria (PCN) headquarters, the agency has appealled to President Muhammadu Buhari to accent the bill establishing the agency, describing the action as the panacea to end the face-off between both law enforcement agencies.
The appeal to the President came barely days after the Federal High Court in Abuja directed the Police to desist from harassing PCN officers and that the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, immediately unseal its headquarters and stop further harassment of its officers.
The Court also directed the Nigerian Police to pay N12.5 million compensation to PCN for their action against them.
PCN, not satisfied with the face-off with the Nigerian Police, argued that their responsibility in the country was not to compete with the law enforcement agency but to ensure peace reigns in Nigeria.
The agency reiterated that PCN is a United Nations (UN) recognized organization with the primary objective of promoting peace in Nigeria.
Speaking at a press conference in Lagos, South-west zonal Commandant of PCN, Mutairu Habib said the corps do not carry arms and not in contention with any existing security agency of government or in competition with any other organization.
The South-West zonal coordinator suggested that the assent of the President to the bill establishing PCN would possibly end the differences between both law enforcement agencies permanently.
âWe are waiting anxiously for President Muhammadu Buhariâs a assent to the Peace Corps Bill, which is sure to provide jobs for thousands of able-bodied youths across the length and breadth of the nation, and promote peace and unity which is a vital component in our drive to entrench a lasting democracy, a thriving economy, and sustained socio-economic development.
âWe therefore pledge our full support for all existing security agencies of the Federal Republic of Nigeria most especially in the face of the various security challenges such as insurgency, kidnapping, vandalism and other related crimes,â he added.
While awaiting the Presidentâs approval, Habib urged the IGP to directives its officers effect the court judgement.
