Governor of Kogi state, Yahaya Bello, was a guest on Channels TV over the weekend and he was asked why he declared a public holiday immediately after President Buhari returned from his medical trip to the UK on August 19th. Read his response below…

“This is a man, a president, who came and inherited a country that was nosediving. Security wise he is doing greatly. Fighting corruption, he is doing wonderfully well. and reviving the economy. He was ill and went on medical vacation. Within that period, the country was under serious heat despite the fact he had a lieutenant in the person of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo. Kogi state is a confluence state between the North and South. The only state that has 10 states bordering it. On June 12th, 1993 during the infamous June 12, a whole lot of vehicular and human beings transversed the country and they all passed through Kogi state. The pressure on Kogi state was high. If anything had happened to him order than him returning back healthy and alive. As a governor, I know how much I am managing the security and safety of that state. I know exactly what it could have posed on the resources of the state and on the state to manage. For, for him returning back alive, I think there is no better way I could have celebrated his life and health”.

When asked if he doesn’t think was a waste of a productive day to the state to declare such a public holiday, Governor Bello said

“No, it is not. If otherwise had happened, and Nigeria gets up in flames, and Kogi state is facing the heat, we would have known how much of productivity we would have lost. We needed to appreciate God or life”.
