Man City 7 – 2 Stoke City: Kevin De Bruyne Masterclass Sees City Leapfrog Manchester United to Go Top
Kevin De Bruyne put on a masterclass as Manchester City hammered Stoke City 7-2 to reclaim top spot in the Premier League table from Manchester United.
Saturday’s early goalless draw between Liverpool and United offered City the chance to leapfrog Jose Mourinho’s Red Devils by two points, and Guardiola’s side made light work of Stoke despite an early scare in the second half.
Gabriel Jesus, Raheem Sterling and David Silva all struck in the first 24 minutes to threaten a potential cricket score at the Etihad, but Mame Birame Diouf gave Mark Hughes’ Potters slight hope heading into the break.
Diouf – formerly of Manchester United – scored soon after the break to scare City, but that goal only served to wake up the hosts once again as De Bruyne inspired his team-mates again after earning them a win at Chelsea before the international break.
City went 4-2 up as De Bruyne assisted Jesus for the Brazilian’s second of the match after 56 minutes, and the hosts restored their three-goal advantage on the hour as Fernandinho blasted home a superb effort.
City added their sixth two minutes after that as De Bruyne found Sane with a stunning pass to finish, with the Belgian then earning a standing ovation as he departed early, before Sterling added his second of the afternoon to cap a stunning match.
