Governor Udom Redeems N65 million Pledge to Akwa United for Winning 2015 Federation Cup
Gov Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom on Friday redeemed the N65 million pledge to the players, management and staff of Akwa United FC of Uyo who won the 2015 Federation Cup.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Emmanuel had pledged cash reward to the 2015 winning team but could not until recently.
The payment was, however, delayed due to crisis following discontentment from some members of the team who felt cheated.
Presenting cheques to the club members, the Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Mr Monday Uko, thanked the governor for redeeming the pledge in spite of the financial difficulties the state was passing through.
Uko commended the players for their peaceful conduct in spite of the delay in redeeming the pledge by the government.
“We must thank Gov. Udom Emmanuel for redeeming his promise as a promise keeper.
“We owe him gratitude for his keen interest in the affairs of Akwa United FC,’’ Uko said.
The commissioner urged the players to continue to be of good conduct as the state government placed their welfare as priority.
NAN reports that the former Chairman of the Club, Mr Nse Ube, received a cheque of N2 million, 34 players received cheques ranging between N500,000 and N1.8 million, while the least among the staff received a cheque of N100, 000.
Responding on behalf of the team, Nse Ube, thanked the governor and government of Akwa Ibom for redeeming the pledge.
He attributed the 2015 success to God’s favour and commended the players for the support given to him when he was the chairman.
