Ivory Coast Vs Senegal Match Abandoned As Fans Invade Pitch (Pics, Video)
Ugly scenes marred the friendly fixture in Paris, with supporters clashing and even confronting the players, forcing the referee to end the game early
Ivory Coast’s friendly international meeting with Senegal was abandoned after fans invaded the pitch and confronted the players.
With the score level at 1-1 after 88 minutes at the Stade Sebastien Charlety in Paris, supporters were able to bypass stewards and actively engage both sets of players in what was a worrying lapse of security.
As one shocking image demonstrates, a fan actually grabs Senegal star Lamine Gassama, seemingly attempting to tackle him to the ground.
The players were then ordered to return to the changing rooms by referee Tony Chapron, with the game officially abandoned with just a couple of minutes of normal time remaining.
Liverpool star Sadio Mane had given Senegal the lead in the game as he converted from the penalty spot in the second half.
Cyriac Gohi Bi equalised just a couple of minutes later, although the game will be remembered for all the wrong reasons following the unpleasant scenes involving supporters.
And it is not the first time that a match between Ivory Coast and Senegal has been brought to a premature end, with an Africa Cup of Nations play-off fixture abandoned in 2012.
With Ivory Coast leading the second leg 2-0 after 74 minutes, Senegal fans rioted, throwing missiles, stones, bottles and firecrackers, with security forces needing to use tear gas in an attempt to restore order.
