A security guard raped a sleeping woman at a house party before texting her an “apology”.

The victim had woken to find Dean Prendegast naked and raping her after she had rejected him earlier in the night, a court heard.

The 36-year-old, who had drank 20 bottles of Stella and “some” Amaretto at the party, told her: “I know it’s wrong, but it feels so right.”

He had “tried it on” with the woman earlier in the night, but she refused his advances and later went to sleep, the court heard.

Prendegast, who worked as a security guard at a retail park, was jailed for four-and-a-half years at Hull Crown Court, East Yorks..

He had been unanimously found guilty of rape after a four-day trial.

There were gasps and sobs from the defendant and his family in the public gallery, but the woman bravely returned to court to read a victim impact statement.

She said: “I want to tell the court how this case affected me.

“Any time during the last 15 months, I got a call from the police or the court to give me an update on the case, it was very upsetting and it would bring it all flooding back.

“For the last 15 months, all I wanted to do was to move on with my life and put this all behind me, but I couldn’t.

“I wanted to live my life without having to explain to people who weren’t in my close friends or family what I was going through, but I couldn’t.

“It really affected my confidence and really made me struggle with my self-esteem.”

The victim was so distressed by the rape that she did not report it until she went to a sexual health clinic nearly a week later.

She was then questioned by police, who arrested Prendegast.

Anthony Dunne, prosecuting, said Prendegast and his victim were known to each other.

He said: “The victim will say she never consented to sex with Prendegast. A text message sent by the defendant two days after said that he acted wrongly towards her.

“She told him to stop when he touched her and was asleep when he began having sex with her. A person who is asleep cannot consent to sex.

“The text he then sent her two days later, in our submission, is an apology for what happened.”

When giving evidence, she said: “I went to sleep and the next thing I remember he was on top of me. He told me he knew it was wrong but it felt so right.

“I told him to get off and he did. I turned over, I didn’t know what to do. I was in shock. I never gave him permission to have sex with me.”

Sentencing Prendegast, Judge Mark Bury said: “You raped her while she was sleeping and she will no doubt remember that for the rest of her life.

“Should you have brought yourself to admit this offence at an earlier stage, a lighter sentence might have been imposed, but as it stands, the lowest sentence I can impose is four-and-a-half years.”

Prendegast was also subject to a restraining order banning him from contacting his victim for the next ten years and will be placed on the sex offenders’ register for life.

He previously told the press how he nearly drank himself to death on a Christmas night out, following an eight-hour pub crawl.

Speaking in December 2014, Prendergast said he suffered acute alcohol poisoning after downing pints and shots.
