Coronation: Benin Groups Commence Spiritual Dance To Usher In New Oba

​TWO prominent traditional groups in Benin Kingdom, the Ogbelaka and Eguadase groups, have commenced a spiritual dance called Ekassa to herald the Crown Prince of Benin, Ehenede Erediauwa to the throne of the Oba of Benin.

The Ekassa dance which will be held daily until after the coronation ceremony is one of the processes to usher in a new king in Benin Kingdom and it is being carried out by specific families in the kingdom.

Ekassa is performed by only the males dressed in white robes after undergoing spiritual cleansing.

The dance moved through streets in Benin city to Uzama Palace where the crown prince is currently carrying out coronation rites and rituals which will last for seven days.

Chief Obawonyi of Ogbelaka and Chief Robert Uhuoba who spoke about the significance of the dance said it was imperative that the dance is carried out after the death of an oba and when a new one is about to ascend the throne.

According to Uhuoba, partaking in the dance that comes in a life time was a privilege.
