Police authorities in Enugu State have moved in to avert further breakdown of law and order at the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus following last Monday’s violent protest by the students over persistent power failure in the campus.
The irate students had given the university management one-week ultimatum to repair the broken down generator which provided alternative power supply. They were said to have been experiencing erratic power supply in the past three months which affected Wi Fi services which each student paid N12,000 for.
Vanguard checks at the campus entry gate showed that Police Amoured Personnel Carrier, APC, and about five patrol vehicles with stern looking policemen were stationed around the gate to forestal further breakdown of law and order.
At the transport section of the university, three campus shuttle buses smashed by the rampaging students littered on the entry gate, even as vandalized street light poles also dotted the lecturers’ quarters.
While speaking with Vanguard,Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu revealed that police have moved in to ensure that properties and lives were secured.
“The presence of our men is to ensure that further breakdown of law and order is maintained. We do not want an escalation of the situation. Properties have been destroyed in the riot over issues the students have against their management.
“We are bent on ensuring public peace and safety so that people can go about their normal business,” the Police spokesman assured.
