A 20-year-old woman, Nkechi Isioko, has been arrested by the Enugu State Command of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), for allegedly selling her two-months-old baby for N100,000 to one Blessing Egbo.
The state Commandant of the NSCDC, Lar Stephen Zwali, while parading Isioko, an indigene of Mpu in Aninri Local Government Area of the state, said the corps had got information of the impending sale of the baby and he mandated his men to swoop in on both the seller and the buyer.
Isioko, who regretted her action, told newsmen that she was impregnated by a man who rejected the baby and as such, she could not take care of her, so she decided to sell the baby to Egbo who had already given her an advanced payment of N10,000 before she gave her the balance.
Child trafficking is assuming a new and alarming dimension these days.
Just a few weeks ago, a Higher National Diploma (HND) student of the Offa Polytechnic, Kwara State, Idiat Babatunde, was arrested by detectives attached to the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly selling her three-weeks-old baby, for N70, 000.
Even men of the cloak are not exempted in this crime as a 71-year-old man of God, Rev. Chima Egbochiogum and his wife, Ugonma, were arrested by men of the Abia State Police Command for allegedly buying a baby illegally from a notorious child trafficker.
