A 21-year-old student, Francis Onitiri, had been arraigned for breaking into a girls’ hostel at night and attacking a guard with a knife. Onitiri was brought before a Somolu Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, on a two-count charge of assault and conspiracy. The accused denied the charges, but prosecutor, Insp. Nurudeen Thomas, told the court that Onitiri and others still at large committed the offences at Classic Girls’ Hostel, No. 35, Morounfolu St., Akoka, Lagos, at about 11.58 p.m. on the 22nd of June 2015. He said the offences contravened Sections 170 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011. Thomas said the accused and his gang scaled the hostel fence and fled when the guard on duty raised alarm.
He said other members of the gang escaped, leaving Onitiri behind.
“While others took to their heels, Onitiri was not lucky and was immediately apprehended by the guard,” Thomas said.
He added that the suspect attacked the guard in a bid to escape.
“The accused, who started struggling to free himself from the guard, brought out a knife and stabbed the guard in the face and chest.”The security guard immediately alerted the girls in the hostel who helped to overpower the accused and was later taken to the police station.”
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs B.O. Osunsanmi, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50, 000 with a surety in like sum and adjourned the case to 12 of August for mention.
Rape and burglary attacks on female hostels have occurred severally at Nigerian institutions. A few days ago, Police in Delta arrested three suspected rapists, Joseph Kenneth, Ejiro Philip and Monday Igba, who were trying to breach female hostels of the Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka.
