India’s ‘Fake Degree’ Minister Resigns
The law minister for the territory of Delhi and member of the Aam Aadmi party (AAP), an anti-corruption party, has resigned from his appointment after he was arrested on suspicion of forging his law degree.
The anti-corruption AAP was in opposition at the national level, but won a landslide victory in the Delhi polls, beating out the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi’s, Bharatiya Janata Party.
A government official said on Wednesday in Delhi, on condition of anonymity, that Jitendra Tomar, never obtained the degree he listed on his nomination for local elections in February.
AAP said the minister submitted his resignation late Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the Delhi police said investigators had gone to the eastern state of Bihar to check Tomar’s law degree and found his claim to be false.
The Police said Tomar has been charged to court for cheating and criminal conspiracy. The politician could face a jail term of up to 7 years if convicted.
Tomar has however denied the allegation and maintained that he has a genuine degree.
