UN Convoy Attacked in Mali, One Killed
A convoy of the United Nations mission in Mali was attacked by assailants and a driver was killed on Monday near Mali’s northern town of Gao, a UN source said.
Preliminary reports said a driver had been killed and his truck burnt, according to a statement by the MINUSMA.
The attack came just two days after a similar attack in Gao, during which two drivers were killed, another one injured and three trucks burnt.
The MINUSMA strongly condemned the new attack.
“I am saddened by these despicable crimes resulting in the loss of lives of innocent civilians. We shall review our operations so that such criminal acts cannot be repeated, MINUSMA cannot tolerate such,” head of MINUSMA and special envoy of the UN secretary-general in Mali Mongi Hamdi said.
He urged Malian security forces to reinforce their security measures, particularly along the concerned road.
“The perpetrators should be arrested quickly,” the statement said.
On Sunday, Malian forces arrested 29 individuals who were in possession of weapons and war materials in Gao.
