The Catholic Bishop of Nsukka Diocese, Rt. Rev. Godfrey Onah, has expressed worry over the impact of Nollywood on the education of children at home.
Onah expressed his displeasure when he delivered a convocation lecture at Veritas University, Abuja, on Tuesday.
The lecture, titled “Catholic Higher Education and Crises of Values in Nigeria’’, was to mark the second and third convocation of the university.
“Nollywood has killed play and study in our children when they are at home.
“Nollywood has its positive and negative sides; it is a potential instrument for education but in this country, I am afraid that there are regulations but there are no implementations.
“You find films marked adults being watched by children; the relevant bodies should ensure strict implementations of these regulations,’’ he said.
According to him, Catholic education can help the Nigerian society solve value crisis because it has the characteristics that equip it to interact with cultures.
He listed some of the features of a Catholic university as continuing with re-election on the catholic faith; fidelity to the Christian message and institutional commitment to the service of God, among others.
Earlier, in her comments, Prof. Viola Onwuliri, Minister of State for Education, who was the chairperson of the lecture, congratulated the graduands and their parents.
Onwuliri also congratulated the Catholic Bishop Conference of Nigeria for its vision in establishing the institution in tandem with the tradition of the church.
“The Catholic Church has the antecedent of being in the vanguard of education in the world; it has 1358 universities across the world; five of them are in Nigeria.
“The topic of the lecture is apt considering the challenges confronting young people in Nigeria today,’’ Onwuliri said.
Onwuliri said she believed that the graduands had imbibed virtues that would make them role models in the society.
