The Defence Headquarters on Thursday said troops are currently pursuing fleeing terrorists from some towns and villages in the Northeast, where they have been wreaking havoc.
Leadership reports that the information was disclosed in a tweet via the Nigerian military handle. The DHQ said Mubi, Michika, Bazza, Gulak, Gwoza, Bama, Gamboru Ngala and other towns and villages in the Northeast are being stabilised following military air and land attacks against fleeing and dying Boko Haram militants.
It said the military attacks are yielding impressive results in the overall move to rid the areas of terrorists activities. It condemned some media platforms for causing panic and chaos with their reportage on the happenings in the region.
“Alarmist Report on Foreign and Online Media on Maiduguri is clearly intended to cause Panic in the city and the nation. All facets of security arrangements for the defence of Maiduguri has been upgraded to handle any planned attack or attempt to disrupt the city’s prevailing peace. This kind of alarmist report is uncalled for in view of the efforts and alertness” DHQ said.
It called on the citizens to remain vigilant and go about their lawful business.
Meanwhile, this new report is contrary to what was earlier reported by the BBC that the dreaded terrorist group, Boko Haram has rounded up Maiduguri, the Borno State capital in preparation for an imminent takeover.
It would be recalled that the Nigerian authorities officially confirmed that the military had taken over Bama, which was recently captured by Boko Haram militant, although one Abu Zinnira, alleged to be the sect’s spokesman claimed that Bama was still under the control of Boko Haram
