Luis Suarez arrives in Montevideo after the World Cup biting incident
Shamed Luis Suarez was greeted by an astonishing hero’s welcome back in Uruguay as fans, family and stars bit back over his ban.
Thousands waited at the airport to welcome the striker after he was kicked out of the World Cup for sinking his teeth into Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini .
Supporters camped out at the airport for 12 hours in Montevideo waving flags, banging drums and wearing cut-out masks of their idol.
At one stage the Uruguay’s President joined the crowds and said he wanted to give Suarez a big hug.
Argentina’s veteran bad boy Diego Maradona got stuck in and said Suarez was being treated like a terrorist .
And, incredibly, Chiellini said the player’s four-month ban was excessive.
On the eve of Uruguay’s second round match against Colombia, fans arriving in Rio joked about the Suarez foul, some pretending to munch on dog bones, others baring fake Dracula teeth.
But the disgraced star’s tearful granny didn’t see the funny side, attacking Fifa bosses for treating him “like a dog”.
Following flight delays, Suarez was eventually greeted by a handful of fans after landing with his wife and two children at 5am.
Supporters had been urged to go home and avoid the cold.
The Liverpool star and his family were taken by transit van to his nearby home where his mother Sandra lives.
As he took out his luggage, Suarez, dressed in a grey hoodie, declined to comment.
Sobbing Lila Piriz Da Rosa had earlier said her grandson had been treated “barbarically” , adding: “Everyone knows what they’ve done to Luis. They wanted him out of the World Cup.
“Perfect, they did it. They chucked him out of there like a dog.”
Suarez is working on an appeal against the four-month and nine international match ban, with lawyers and Uruguay’s FA.
He will not play in today’s Colombia game but if Uruguay progress, they will demand he is allowed back for the quarter final.
Savaging Fifa, Hand of God legend Maradona said: “It is shameful, they have no sensitivity towards fans, they might as well handcuff him and throw him in Guantanamo.”
Wearing a tee-shirt which said “Luis, we are with you” he added: “It hurts that they have cut short the career of a lad who is a winner.
“It’s an excessive suspension, Fifa cannot talk about morals to anyone.
“Suarez didn’t kill anyone. This is an unjust punishment , the act of an incredible mafia.”
But the most surprising statement came from Suarez’s victim Chiellini.
He said: “I believe it is excessive.
“Now inside me there’s no feelings of joy, revenge or anger against Suarez for an incident that happened on the pitch and that’s done.
“There only remains the anger and the disappointment about the match.
“At the moment my only thought is for Luis and his family, because they will face a very difficult period.”
Uruguayan President Jose Mujica also went on the attack and said: “They measure him by a different yardstick and that makes us indignant.
“We knocked out England and Italy, look how much money they’ve lost there!
“We are a small country and our TV rights aren’t worth much.
“I’m waiting for him to come back so I can give him a big hug.”
Some reports suggested the President would join Uruguay FA lawyer Alejandro Balbi in Barcelona to prepare an appeal against the footballer’s four-month ban with European lawyers.
He said: “Luis’s punishment is absolutely illogical, unjust and completely unrelated to what it is intended for.”
Security was increased outside Italian and British embassies in Montevideo after locals threatened protests as Suarez was condemned.
