"What Caused Super Eagle's Poor Performance Against Iran" -Enyeama Reveals
Super Eagle’s Goalkeeper, Vincent Enyeama, who is also the assistant captain of the team on Thursday, said that the absence of inspiration by the Nigeria Football Supporters Club (NFSC) was responsible for the teams poor performance against Iran in their first group match on Monday in Brazil.
It would be recalled that the NFSC did not arrive early enough to be part of the stadium crowd at Curitiba when the Eagles were playing the match which eventually ended goalless.
The Nigeria/Iran match was a Group F opening game for both sides.
Enyeama, who made this known to sport reporters in São Paulo, noted that the Eagles missed the traditional drumming, singing and blowing of trumpets by members of the supporters club.
According to him, the situation made the whole stadium look like an empty and void space to many of the Eagles players.
“We were at a loss because we could not hear their usual drumming, singing and trumpeting which usually are our tonic for better and improved performance” he said. “Their support always gave us the zeal, because their presence do not only intimidate our opponents, it also gives us the courage that the whole Nigerians are behind us.”
Security operatives at the stadium prevented members of the supporters club from entering the stadium with their drums, while some were also barred for wearing Globacom-branded attire.
The Eagles would be playing their must win match on Saturday, June 21 against Bosnia-Herzegovina in the Group F of the competition, while it would play against Argentina on June 25 in their last group match.
