A Fine Arts teacher of the Delta Career College, Warri, Godwin Onoyiwa, has been earned himself a 14-year-jail term with hard labour for raping a 9-year-old student of the school.
Justice P. Onajite-Kuejubola of the Effurun High Court found the 33-year-old teacher guilty of the one count charge of rape.
Handing down the verdict, Justice Onajite-Kuejubola said rape ” is a dastardly act that must be discouraged” and “not go unpunished.”
“Male teachers whose parents entrust their wards in their care must desist from such act.
“I, hereby, sentence you to 14 years imprisonment with hard labour,” she said.
The court was told by the victim (names withheld) that Onoyiwa committed on the 23rd of September 2008 in his office after extra lessons organised by the school.
According to a Tribune report, the victim (names withheld) said Onoyiwa had forcefully had sex with her and warned her not to tell anybody or risk failing her exams.
“When I told him that I was looking for my school bag, he asked me to wait in his office so that he can get the keys to the classroom my bag was locked in.
“As I was waiting, he came and covered my mouth with his hands to prevent me from shouting and raped me. I even bit his hands” the little girl recounted,”she said
The mother however became suspicious after noticing that her daughter acted strangely.
She probed further and the nine-year-old told eventually narrated her ordeal.
