Mad Man gets 6 Strokes of Cane for Attempt to Commit Offence
An Abuja Grade 1 Area Court in Kado on Thursday
ordered one Alade Afolabi to be given six strokes of the cane for attempt to commit an offence.
The accused, 21, of no fixed address, neither pleaded not guilty nor guilty to the charge after the First Information Report (FIR) was read.
The presiding officer, Malam Abubakar Sadiq, refused to grant the accused bail because, according to him, he found out that Afolabi was mentally challenged.
Sadiq ordered that the accused be flogged six times after he criminally assaulted one Akin Lanre who was trying to withdraw some money from an ATM machine.
Police Prosecutor, Simon Ibrahim, told the court that Lanre of No 43, Mr Biggs Road, Lugbe, Abuja, reported the matter at Utako Police Station on April 12.
Ibrahim said that the accused was not able to collect any money from the complainant even after assaulting him.
He said that the offence contravened section 95 of the Penal Code.
It states that “whoever attempts to commit an offence will be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to one half of the longest term provided for that offence or with such fine as is provided for the offence or with both”
