Yesterday, Prof. Pat Utomi a renowned scholar and Economist was
a guest lecturer at the 27th Convocation Lecture of the University of
Calabar. He spoke on the topic; POLICY AND THE
PURSUIT OF POVERTY – THE TROUBLE WITH
NIGERIA AND THE HOPE OF RENAISSANCE.
Prof. Utomi in the lecture, said that the discovery of oil and the
wealth that comes with it meant that creativity eludes Nigeria. He
said Nigeria was sliding backward due to weak institutions using the
CBN as the manager. Utomi also added his voice to the Sanusi saga
by insisting Mallam Sanusi deserved what he got. He opined that
Sanusi set the country back 10 years as CBN Governor. He said
SLS lacked the charisma required of a CBN Governor, arguing that
Sanusi is more disposed to Politics and Argument than leading the
apex bank. He said Northern Nigeria has the highest number of Local
Govts in Nigeria and draws subtantially from the federation accounts.
But they remain the poorest.
