Nigerian stock exchange sees 77% drop in trading activity as market capitalisation rises
Stock market investors exchanged 3.6 billion shares valued at N112.2 billion in 138,250 transactions on the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) Limited over a five-day trading period. This represents a 77.59 percent drop in transaction value compared to the 17.49 billion shares worth N500.7 billion traded in 142,082 deals the previous week.

According to the NGX weekly market report, the all-share index — a benchmark for measuring overall market performance — rose by 2.18 percent to close at 134,452.93. Market capitalisation also climbed to N85.055 trillion.
The financial services, agriculture, and oil and gas sectors emerged as the top performers for the week. The financial services sector led activity with 2.127 billion shares valued at N47.29 billion in 57,121 deals. This sector accounted for 57.62 percent of total trading volume and 42.13 percent of trading value.
The agriculture sector followed with 273.69 million shares worth N12.87 billion in 11,284 deals, while the oil and gas industry recorded a turnover of 255.14 million shares valued at N11.808 billion in 10,706 transactions.
Access Holdings, United Bank for Africa (UBA), and Japaul Gold and Venture Plc were the top three equities by volume. These companies recorded a combined 745.39 million shares valued at N19.457 billion in 15,720 deals. Collectively, they contributed 20.19 percent of the total trading volume and 17.33 percent of the total trading value.
A total of 60 equities gained during the week, up from 49 the previous week. Leading the gainers was the Initiative Plc, which saw its share price rise by N6.10 to close at N16.13 from N10.03. Academy Press gained N2.31 to end at N9.31 from N7.00. Nigerian Enamelware also rose by N6.65 to close at N27.30 from N20.35.
Wema Bank’s share price increased by N3.80, closing at N19.90 from N16.10. Presco Plc recorded one of the highest gains, appreciating by N285 to end the week at N1,550 per share from N1,265.
On the losing side, Secure Electronic Technology lost N0.29, falling to N0.92 from N1.21. Omatek Ventures dropped to N1.24 from N1.63, while Meyer Plc declined by N4.50 to close at N16.50 from N21.00.
Neimeth International Pharmaceuticals Holdings Plc saw its share price fall to N6.50 from N8.05, and Associated Bus Company lost N1.06, ending the week at N4.59 from N5.65.
