Court grants Dele Farotimi N50 million bail
A Federal High Court sitting in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, has granted Dele Farotimi, a human rights activist, N50 million bail with one surety.
The court in a ruling on Monday, December 8, 2024, asked the surety to provide evidence of two years’ tax clearance, land document and a letter of authorisation from the telecommunication operator.
The court also adjourned the case to to January 29, 2025
Farotimi was taken to court by Chief Afe Babalola, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, after being arrested by operatives of the Ekiti State Police Command.
Babalola, 95, accused Farotimi of defaming him in a book titled Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System.
The arrest sparked outrage across the country, prompting civil society organizations and the Nigerian Bar Association to call for the activist’s release.
