Several goods and properties destroyed as fire hits popular Dosunmu market in Lagos for second time in one month (Video)
Several goods and properties have been reportedly destroyed as fire rocked the popular Dosunmu Market located on Lagos Island.
The fire incident occurred early hours of Tuesday, April 9, 2024.
In a series of photographs and videos shared on social media, the fire was seen burning heavily on some high-rise buildings in the market.
According to a video shared on X (Twitter) and seen by our reporter, the user alleged that the fire was caused by a generator explosion.
“Just in guys, Eko Idumota (Dosunmu) Market on fire due to generator explosion, and no firefighters in sight yet,” the X user, simply identified as Adunni, claimed.
“The fire keeps going up. People are running for safety,” she added.
This incident was confirmed by Ibrahim Farinloye, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Zonal Coordinator, South-West in a statement issued on Tuesday.
Farinloye added that operatives of the Fire Service and other relevant institutions had been mobilised to extinguish the inferno.
The extent of the damage is not yet ascertained at the time of filing this report.
This incident is coming barely three weeks after SaharaReporters reported how four buildings were destroyed by an inferno at the same market.
It was also reported on Monday that a three-storey building located at Breadfruit Street, Balogun Market in Lagos State was gutted by fire.
A press statement made available by Margaret Adeseye, Director of Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service disclosed that the fire started from the second floor of the building.
