Army Lieutenant killed and four other soldiers injured as terrorists ambush Nigerian troops in Borno
One Army Lieutenant has been confirmed dead and four others injured as Boko Haram terrorists ambushed Nigerian troops in Borno state.
The attacked was carried out by the terrosists along Buratai – Buni Gari road in Borno State last Thursday.
The soldiers were said to have been heading to Damaturu, Yobe state capital, to purchase petrol when the attack occurred.
Earlier reports suggested that no fewer than 6 soldiers were killed and several others severely injured.
However, Defence headquarters in a statement issued yesterday clarified that only an Army Lieutenant was killed and four other soldiers wounded.
It further disclosed that six terrorists were killed when troops pursued the terrorists to their hideouts and engaged them in a shootout.
Major Gen Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, who disclosed this in a statement, titled “Report On Ambush Along Road Buratai to Buni Gari in Operation Hadin Kai Operational Theatre,” said: “On April 5, 2024, at about 0935hrs, troops of Operation Hadin Kai encountered terrorist ambush along Buratai-Buni Gari road.
“Sadly, during the encounter, troops lost a lieutenant that was killed in action, while four personnel were wounded in action and are receiving treatment.
“Troops reinforcement pursued the terrorists to their hideout within the Timbuktu Triangle and made contact. Troops neutralised six of the terrorists recovering 5 AK 47 rifles and 103 rounds of the 7. 62mm special ammunition.
“The remaining terrorist ran in disarray . However, troops are in hunt of the remnant terrorists that fled the firefight.”
The attack adds to the growing list of killings of army personnel by insurgents and other criminal elements.
In March, 17 personnel — comprising a lieutenant colonel, two majors, one captain, and 13 soldiers — were killed while on a “peacekeeping mission” in Okuama, Bomadi LGA of Delta.
The army personnel were buried at the military cemetery in Abuja on March 27.
