Bola Tinubu has called off his 70th birthday celebration citing the deadly attack on a train conveying passengers from Abuja to Kaduna.

At least 60 people have been said to have died including a young medical doctor after terrorists attacked the train on Monday.

“For me to be celebrating, dancing and enjoying myself doesn’t show enough concern of a statesman, as a senior citizen of this country,” said Tinubu, leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

On Tuesday 29 March 2022 at the Eko Hotel and Suites where he was speaking, the 2023 presidential aspirant announced that “this event will not be holding”.

Tinubu, a former Lagos state governor, who disclosed that he was told over 60 people lost their lives described the incident as “sad” and urged the clergies present at the event to pray for the country and “everyone to go home and pray”.

A video of his speech was shared on Twitter by his aide Jubril Gawat, who wrote in the caption:

“FLASH: Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu announces the cancellation of his 70th Birthday Celebration on the stage at Eko Hotel and Suites where guests and well-wishers were already seated for the event … Asiwaju says it calls for sober reflection and not celebration.
