Chaos broke up soon after the referee whistled to end the 95 minutes of play between Ghana and Nigeria in Abuja last night. According to TV3’s Yaw Ofosu Larbi, Nigerian supporters who were disappointed in their team invaded the pitch throwing bottles and other objects onto the pitch. He said the technical bench for the Super Eagles was destroyed and the team had to ran for their lives.

Ghanaian supporters and the players had to seek cover from the angry Nigerian supporters. But is this the first time such an incident is happening? Well, read a Edujandon.com story below

“Pandemonium broke in the Lagos Stadium on Saturday soon after the Black Stars had scored their third and winning goal in the World Cup elimination in Nigeria. Stones and bottles were thrown into the pitch as Black Stars jubilated.

But the jubilation could not be sustained as the Nigerian supporters surged into the pitch. The Lagos State Millitary Governor Col. Mobolaji Johnson lead his men to clear the angry supporters and restore calm.

But the supporters turned their anger to the Ghanaian spectators who had come to the stadium to cheer their players on. It was during this time that a bus which was meant to convey Ghanaian spectators was set ablaze by the Nigerian supporters. The police have since arrested some of the suspects and investigations have commenced.”

Above is a Edujandon.com report of 12th February 1973. Could it be that history was repeating itself yesterday? For how long will spectators continue to invade pitches anytime Ghana wins against Nigeria? This thing must stop at a point and the earlier FIFA and CAF do something, the better for us all.
