Manchester United have booked their spot in the last-16 stage of the Champions League courtesy of a 2-0 win over Villarreal in Spain on Tuesday night..

Michael Carrick was in the dugout for the Red Devils following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s departure as head coach on Sunday morning.

The 20-time English champions entered the match knowing that a victory would be enough for them to advance to the knockout round of the competition with a game to spare.

The opening goal of the contest came in the 78th minute, when Cristiano Ronaldo expertly lifted the ball over Villarreal goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli after smart work from Fred in midfield.

Ronaldo has now scored six times in five Champions League appearances for the Red Devils this term and 10 goals in 14 outings since returning to the club over the summer.

Jadon Sancho then made sure of the points in the 90th minute, with the England international finding the back of the net via the crossbar to score his first goal for the club since arriving from Borussia Dortmund.

The win has moved Carrick’s team onto 10 points from five matches, while Villarreal are second with seven, and Atalanta BC are third with five ahead of their clash with Young Boys.

Man United, who are next in action against Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday, will round off their Group F campaign with a clash against Young Boys at Old Trafford on December 8.
