Nine persons have been confirmed dead and several others injured following the Sunday attack by gunmen on the Jos Medium Security Custodial Centre..

Details of the casualties recorded were disclosed by the Spokesman of the Nigeria Correctional Service NCoS, Francis Enobore.

Enobore in a statement to newsmen said the invading gunmen were trapped inside the facility in a deadly gun duel with security agents after they quickly reinforced to face attackers who have already accessed the facility.

He said one security agent attached to the facility paid the supreme price while nine inmates were killed in the encounter.

The statement said: “The attackers who stormed the Custodial Center at about 5:20pm on Sunday had engaged the armed squad of the NCoS in a fierce gun battle before breaking into the yard.

“Another staff of the Service was shot in the hand and six inmates were also injured in the attack”, the statement said.

The statement revealed that attackers with about
262 inmates escaped early before reinforcement from a sister security agency arrived.

He explained that about ten escapee inmates have been recaptured.

The Custodial Centre called on the public for collaboration as they arrive to rearrest all the fleeing inmates through passing credible intelligence that could nip such ugly incidents in the bud.

The Jos Medium Security Custodial Centre before the time of the attack had 1,060 inmates comprising 560 pre-trial detainees and 500 convicts.
