2021 Ballon d’Or: Lewandowski deserved to win, I’m surprised about Salah – Jurgen Klopp

Liverpool boss, Jurgen Klopp has said Bayern Munich striker, Robert Lewandowski should have won the 2021 award instead of Lionel Messi..

Klopp also expressed surprise that his striker, Mohamed Salah finished seventh in the Ballon d’Or standings.

Egyptian Salah has been sensational for the Reds this year, scoring 22 Premier League goals, just two behind Golden Boot winner Harry Kane.

He has also continued his fine form this season scoring 11 goals in 13 top-flight matches to help Klopp’s side remain third in the Premier League table and keep the hope of winning the title alive.

But Salah finished behind the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, N’Golo Kante and Jorginho, in the Ballon d’Or standings.

“Yea, about his position I was surprised, to be honest, it’s not in my hands. I saw the vote somewhere,” Klopp told reporters ahead of Liverpool’s Premier League clash with Everton.

“The Ballon d’Or is a journalist vote, it’s not my fault it’s yours. If you think he should be higher up then you have to convince your colleagues.

“I’m not sure about the award, you can always give it to Lionel Messi for the career he has had, the footballer he is.

“But if you don’t give it to Robert Lewandowksi this time then it’s quite tricky to get it at all.

“And yes Mo should have definitely been higher up, but it is what it is.”
