Patrice Evra has detailed a conversation he had with Cristiano Ronaldo over WhatsApp before his return to Manchester United was announced..

It has been a whirlwind 24 hours for United but it has ended with the remarkable return of Ronaldo 12-years on from his departure to Real Madrid.

Things looked a lot different on Thursday, however, as it appeared that the 36-year-old would be crossing enemy lines to join local rivals Manchester City.

The news did not go down well with supporters — nor many current and former United players who acted to convince Ronaldo to come back to Old Trafford instead.

The Manchester Evening News revealed that legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson reached out to his former player on Friday morning to talk to him about a return to United, while club great Rio Ferdinand has revealed he called him to dissuade him of a move to the blue half of Manchester.

Ronaldo’s compatriot Bruno Fernandes also hinted that he played a role in the move by tweeting ‘agent Bruno’ after it was confirmed.

Former left-back and fan favourite Evra has also revealed that he did his bit to get Ronaldo back home.

The Frenchman posted a photo on his social media channels that shows a message exchange between himself and Ronaldo on WhatsApp..

The conversation begins with Ronaldo saying [sic]: “My brp. All good. Thinks going well. And you?” which Evra replied to with a voice note that we can’t hear.

But it must have been something funny as Ronaldo replied with three laughing emojis before saying: “You the man, I’m gonna play in our club.”

That message was sent at 11:03am, meaning Ronaldo knew that he was going to return to United at least six hours before it was confirmed.

In a post that accompanied the photo, Evra wrote [sic]: “People have to calm down sometimes!!! He say he’s coming home. relaxxx man. Now I can post it. BIGGEST TRANSFER IN FOOTBALL HISTORY.”

United have confirmed they have reached a deal with Juventus, understood to be with €28million, though the move is still subject to an agreement on personal terms, a medical and visa.
