Gunmen are said to have killed eight police officers at security checkpoints along the Port Harcourt-Owerri road in the state’s Ikwerre LGA.

During the attacks, security operatives’ weapons were said to have been carted away, and vehicles were set ablaze.

The governor characterised the attacks as unjustified and callous in a statement released on Sunday by Kelvin Ebiri, his special assistant on media, who said there was no excuse for the killings.

“The unjustified callous assault on security personnel saddens the government of Rivers State. We express our condolences to the families of those killed in the attack,” Wike was quoted as saying.

“We condemn this barbaric act, share the security agencies’ sorrow, and express our heartfelt condolences.”

Wike ordered the arrest of the attackers, warning that those responsible would not go unpunished.
