The incident happened in the Jakana axis of the road.

Military sources disclosed that the insurgents attacked the army’s 28 task force brigade in the area, and while they were being engaged, they turned on travelers plying the road.

“They attempted to attack the military base, but the troops gave them a run,” one of the sources said.

“While they were retreating to the bush, they got to the highway and abducted some passengers they ran into the bush with.

“Soldiers are still tracing them in order to rescue those abducted.”

Another source said the axis is becoming deadlier as the insurgents now target travelers.

“Anything from 2pm, it becomes dangerous to use that road. That’s why we advise our people traveling to make it early in the morning,” he said.

An eyewitness, Haijya Mairo, who narrowly missed the attack, disclosed that they were close to the scene when they suddenly heard deafening sounds and their driver made a U-turn to Benisheik town.

“Alhamdulahii, we left Damaturu to Maiduguri after we passed Mainok and at a village called Gari Kututru, we started hearing heavy sounds all over,” she said.

“Some vehicles in front made U-turn and our driver turned back and we went back to Benshiek.
