It is within Africa’s cultural practices and its our tradition to give a deceased the very last respect that they deserve. One of those practices include burying the deceased using a coffin.
But custom made coffins are becoming more popular especially in West Africa particularly Ghana.
According to internet sources, these coffins are designed based on the preferences, job, and habits of the deceased, when he or she was alive. It is said that they are also designed according to one’s will or how they wished the coffin to look like when they were alive.
Ghanaians have always hit headlines, when it come to burial ceremonies. Just some years back when videos of gentlemen dancing in a choreographical manner while carrying a coffin went viral on social media.
They were Ghanaians pallbearers, they are known for their extravagant outfits and dancing funeral services. locally they are referred to as Nana Otafrija Pallbearing. Their videos have been shared, viewed millions of time, they have been converted into internet memes during this Covid19 pandemic both to entertain and to inform users.
But unexpectedly, they have repeatedly warned people to be extra careful during this Covid19 Pandemic, by telling people to simply “stay at home or dance with us”.
On asked why they dance happily during sad moments when a deceased is being buried, they insisted that their aim is to celebrate ones’ life instead of mourning when they die. They told BBC that, “We want to thank all of the doctors in the world, you are working hard and taking care of everyone. Now remember, stay at home or dance with us. ‘
They have attracted names like Dancing Coffin, Coffin Dancers, and the Coffin Dance Meme. Their memes went viral, catching even the attention of President Donald Trump where he shared a video of pallbearers dancing carrying a casket. He was downplaying Joe Biden’s campaign.
