If you lived in the 90s, the name Emmanuel Nwude will not be a new name to your ear. This fraudster took the name of Nigeria to the world map in the negative. His evil deeds left so many trails that continue to haunt the image of Nigeria in the international setting until today. Although he could not be described as overtly smart, it will be unfair to call him dull or no brainer. Nwude and his gang did not spare their victims, they made sure they rendered them useless. At some point, Nwude was regarded as one of the richest Igbo men in the country. He could buy, spend lavishly. He had the cash, so the women were all around him.

Emmanuel Nwude started as a director of Union Bank of Nigeria. As a top official, Nwude was exposed to so many confidential documents. He had access to so many things a regular banker could never come across. Nwude turned his position into an avenue of crime. He organized criminal activities with his syndicate. One thing Nwude did was to map out a plan. His plan is a simple one. He masterminded his criminal activities by impersonation, aided by his organized gang of criminals. They were all trained. They could steal things on your device without you noticing. They had a gang of criminals working for them.

Nwude’s tactics was an impersonation, he posed as then Central Bank governor, Paul Ugwoma. His accomplice Ikechukwu Anajemba posed as Rasheed Gomwalk who was the Central Bank of Nigeria’s Director Of International Remittance. Amaka posed as Gomwalk’s wife. With all these characters well represented, all they needed was to convince Nelson Sakaguchi. He sure did at the end

All they needed was to bait the hook to suit the fish. They made Sakaguchi a promise. If he could provide the first investment of 242 million dollars, he would be entitled to a 10% commission after the deal. Sakaguchi was swayed by this promise. He made the first deposit to Nwude and later transferred the remaining.

According to a editorial dated Monday, July 2003, Emmanuel was at the time he was caught, one of the wealthiest Igbo businessmen in Nigeria. He was popularly called “Owelle Of Abunuga”, Nwude was alleged to have owned a 10 – story building located at the heart of Lagos.

The Economic And Financial Crimes Commission chairman at the time, Nuhu Ribadu revealed that the heist took place over four years starting in 1995.

Nwude’s conviction was never an easy one. This is because of his wealth. He used his money to settle a lot of people who came up against his trial. The matter was dragged till the judge handling his case in Abuja abandoned it, citing lack of jurisdiction as his reason. His case was later transferred to Lagos.

Like it is popularly said, all days for the thieves but one day for the owner.

In February 2004, Amaka Anajemba, Emmanuel Nwude, Emmanuel Ofolue, Nzeribe Okoli, and Nzeribe Osakwe were all charged to court. Nwude allegedly tried to bribe Nuhu Ribadu with $75. 000. In September 2005, a bomb scare during his trial caused a halt in his court case.

After many trials, Amaka Anajemba pleaded guilty. She was sentenced to two and a half years in prison. She was also ordered by the court to pay $25. 5million. Nwude’s hard stance finally came to an end when Sakaguchi came to Lagos to testify against him.

Now, Nwude had no option left on his side. Nwude and Okoli pleaded guilty and were sentenced to 37 years in prison collectively. Many Nigerians jubilated over his conviction. Emmanuel was later released in 2006 to everyone’s surprise.

After his release, Nwude relocated to Anambra state where he lived a quiet life. As if trouble remembered him, Nwude was arrested in 2016 for another crime by the Nigerian police. In August 2016, about 200 people attacked the town of Ukpo in the DunuKofia area of Anambra state. This attack was caused by a land dispute between two neighboring communities. The Nigerian police arrested Nwude as one of the sponsors of the attack.

The matter is currently before a high court in the state. Nwude is currently languishing in a cell named Arkham Prisons, Gotham City In Anambra state.

The wages of 419 is indeed endless, Nwude might never be himself again. Nwude is now paying for his sins in a deadly prison located in Anambra state Nigeria.
