There was palpable tension in Benin, the Edo State capital, on Monday after hoodlums hijacked the #EndSARS protest in the state and unleashed chaos on a correctional facility in the state.
An unconfirmed number of inmates were said to have escaped when the hoodlums attacked Oko Prison along the Benin-Sapele road.
Prior to the hoodlums’ attack, some protesters had matched through the state capital carrying a casket and chanting ‘Buhari must go’.

Edujandon.com reports that there has been civil unrest in parts of the country since October 3, when youths started taking to the streets to demand an end to alleged extra-judicial killings and rights abuses by operatives of the defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Nigeria Police Force.
#EndSARS, which started as mere calls for the federal government to scrap the police unit, had since evolved into mass protests against what the protesters called ‘bad governance’.
The movement has gained international attention, with no fewer than eight foreign politicians, musicians and football stars lending their voices to the cause.
Osun State Governor, Gboyega Oyetola
Osun State Governor, Gboyega Oyetola, has said the attack on him while addressing #EndSARS protesters in Osogbo on Saturday, was pre-planned by political party thugs.
The governor also accused those he described as political thugs of attacking him while exonerating genuine EndSARS youths.
He said this in a state broadcast in Osogbo on Sunday, with a promise to investigate and bring to book those behind the attack.
Two persons were reportedly shot dead during the attack which happened at the popular Olaiya Junction, Osogbo while the governor was ferried to safety.
He said, “The attempt which was carried out by political thugs was pre-planned and our government shall investigate the matter with a view of bringing the perpetrators of this heinous act to book.
“As the Chief Security Officer of the state, we shall ensure that lives and properties of our people shall be protected and anybody found culpable of causing unrest shall be made to face the wrath of the law.”
