Manchester City have beaten Liverpool to win the Community Shield after penalties were needed to separate the best two sides from last season.

City went ahead through Raheem Sterling in the first half, but Joel Matip’s second-half equaliser sent the game to penalties. City scored every spot kick, with Claudio Bravo denying Georginio Wijnaldum to allow Gabriel Jesus to score the winning penalty. The victory means City have won seven of the last eight domestic trophies on offer.City named Leroy Sane in the starting XI amid speculation he would be left out to accelerate a transfer to Bayern Munich, but he only lasted 12 minutes as he was substituted with injury. Aymeric Laporte was also absent with a knock, so Nicolas Otamendi started.

Attention now turns to the new Premier League season next week against West Ham.
