Nigeria remains committed to Sahrawi Republic — Buhari
President Muhammadu Buhari said on Thursday Nigeria’ s support for the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic and its quest for self – determination had not changed .
He noted that the country remained committed to the resolutions of the African Union and the United Nations on the status of SADR.
He spoke in Abuja when he received the President of SADR, Brahim Ghali , at the Presidential Villa .
Nigeria had recognised SADR on November 11 , 1984 when Buhari first ruled the country as a military head of state .
“ Nigeria remains committed to supporting the efforts of the AU and the UN toward finding a lasting solution to the Sahrawi problem, ” Buhari told Ghali .
Ghali had visited Nigeria to attend Wednesday ’ s Democracy Day, a day set aside to honour the sacrifices made by the presumed winner of the June 12 , 1993 Presidential Election , the late Chief MKO Abiola.
Speaking earlier, Ghali thanked Buhari and Nigeria for the support SADR had continued to receive from the country.
He added that SADR needed the support of Nigeria to be freed from “ colonisation . ”
Meanwhile , Buhari has said Nigeria would do all within its ability to stabilise the West African sub- region .
A statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity , Mr Femi Adesina , said the President made the commitment when the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary – General for West Africa and the Sahel , Mohammad Chambas , visited him .
The statement read further , “ President Buhari also restated his belief that peaceful relations with Nigeria ’ s neighbours remained imperative in confronting terrorism and insurgency .
“ Chambas , who represented the UN Secretary – General , Antonio Guterres , at the Democracy Day celebration, said the UN boss extended his personal admiration for President Buhari ’ s ‘ integrity and quality as a statesman, especially in fighting corruption and driving public accountability . ’
“ He said the UN appreciated the Nigerian leader ’ s commitment to tackling poverty , terrorism , insurgency and recharging Lake Chad . ”
Chambas added that the UN would continue to give technical support to the Independent National Electoral Commission to conduct Nigeria’ s next elections .
He also commented on the recent emergence of Prof . Tijjani Muhammad -Bande, a Nigerian, as the President of the 74 th UN General Assembly .
“ We have no doubt that he will be a pride to Nigeria and Africa , ” he stated.
