Rio Ferdinand set to turn down Manchester United job

Published

Rio Ferdinand is considering rejecting the chance to return to Manchester United because he does not want to move his family to the North-West, the Manchester Evening News reports.

The 40-year-old has held talks with Ed Woodward over a senior position on United’s board.United are keen to appoint a technical director and it is believed Mike Phelan is in pole position to get the job.

However, Phelan wants to retain a link to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first team set-up and United want a sporting director to oversee club recruitment.

Even though Ferdinand is interested in a return to Old Trafford, he has reservations over “uprooting his young family”.

The former England defender has three young children all below the age of 12 and he lost his wife Rebecca to breast cancer in 2013.
