Europa League: Wenger slammed for Arsenal’s 1-0 loss to Atletico Madrid

BBC Sports pundit, Chris Sutton has slammed Arsene Wenger for Arsenal’s failure to reach the Europa League final.
Arsenal travelled to Atletico Madrid’s Wanda Metropolitano knowing they needed to score at least once following Antoine Griezmann’s away goal in last week’s 1-1 draw at the Emirates.

The Gunners were beaten 1-0 in Spain with Diego Costa firing the home side into the final with Marseille on May 16.

Sutton gave credit to Atletico Madrid while suggesting Wenger has failed to address long-standing problems for Arsenal.

“The best team won,” said Sutton on BBC Radio 5 Live.

“It’s sad and it’s the end of an era for Arsene Wenger but it was the same old story, a soft goal cost them.

“Then they couldn’t get back in it and the final ball wasn’t good enough.

“This has been the story under Wenger for many years now.

“How Arsenal could have done with Diego Godin on their team tonight.

“In the early days Arsenal could win in any fashion – playing pretty football or beating you up.

“But now it’s too few and far between and they do not have the substance at the back.”
