Wayne Rooney says he text Rio Ferdinand about Cristiano Ronaldo’s bicycle kick against Juventus – and claimed that his 2011 effort was better. The Real Madrid forward left viewers in awe on Tuesday night when he produced a moment of magic against Champions League opponents Juventus.

Naturally, the Portugal captain’s brilliant strike drew comparisons with that of Rooney’s against Manchester City in 2011.

Following the clash, former Red Devils centre-back Ferdinand explained why he thought Ronaldo’s was the better goal.

“His one was off his shin pad but the occasion and where he is, to score this goal,” Ferdinand said on BT Sport.

“He turns up every time he is asked to deliver on the big stage, he delivers.

“In his relentless pursuit of greatness, he produces an absolute moment of brilliance.

“This lit up this studio, imagine what it did for people around the world to see one of the greatest, if not the greatest player on the planet, to produce a moment like this against Juventus, the magnitude of the game, the occasion.

“The athleticism, look how high he is off the floor, it is a joke.”

The following morning, Ferdinand backed up his opinion by tweeting: “Don’t be comparing @cristiano overhead kick to @waynerooney’s vs Man City which came of his shin… Morning Wazza!!”
