Tension as Nigerian troops battle Boko Haram in Maiduguri

There is currently tension and confusion in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital as the Nigerian troops engage members of the Boko Haram sect in a gun duel.
DAILY POST reports that gunshots and heavy artillery sounds could be heard all over the city.

Residents of Giwa Barracks said Boko Haram terrorists were trying to take over the state capital while being repelled by the troops.

A resident of the area, who gave his name as Malam Umar Sani, said many people have deserted their homes at the moment.

“Pray for us as the fighting is around our area,” he told our reporter on Thursday.

Meanwhile, residents of Molai area are also fleeing their homes to Damboa area following the fight.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Army has enjoined residents of Maiduguri to remain calm and be vigilant following ongoing fire exchange with members of the Boko Haram sect trying to take over the city.

A terse statement by Colonel Kingsley Samuel, Deputy Director Army Public Relations on Thursday evening said, the security situation in Maiduguri was under control.

“The general public is please requested not to panic and discountenance rumours of Boko Haram presence,” the statement said.
